About Erevnite Asteron

Erevnite Asteron, which is Greek for "Starseekers" or "Star Followers", is a small gathering of friends who socialize together at events of the Society for Creative Anachronism and other living history activities. We also are friends in the modern world. Unlike many of the large peerage-centered households in the SCA, Erevnite Asteron is very small and informal.

The Erevnite Asteron household was founded in about 1992 by Milica of Varna and Iustinos Tekton (called Justin), who began attending Pennsic War and other SCA events together. In 1994, Milica and Justin were among the 18 people who co-founded the Marche of Alderford, a new shire located in Canton, Ohio, and other nearby towns. Shortly after Alderford's founding, Justin and Milica invited Meredydd verch Rhys to join the household, and Erevnite Asteron has gradually increased in numbers since then. The household currently includes about 15 people.

Since Justin is the male member of the household with the most seniority (and also currently the only SCA peer), many people assume that he is the "head" of the household. In fact, the opposite is true. We decided early on to have no officers at all — we're all close friends and don't need them! But since people expect us to have a "leader", we decided that when someone asks who is our leader, the person who is asked will always pick someone else besides themselves, totally at random, just to make things interesting. Children and even babies are eligible, though a landmark administrative decision in 2004 decreed that unborn fetuses are not! The only member of the household who is never eligible is Justin, just because we have a perverse sense of humor.

Erevnite Asteron is a family-oriented household, with members from very young children up through late middle age. We're fun to be around, but not heavy-duty party people. Nothing against such things — we're not prudes, but wild partying isn't our cup of tea. The household includes people of varied walks of life and political and religious backgrounds, from devout Christian to agnostic to Jewish to Pagan and a couple who aren't sure what they are. The funny thing is, since the household's founding, we've never had a serious dispute about any of these issues; people just respect one another's personal values, and we all get along. Would that the world at large could do as well!

Erevnite Asteron invites others to "guest camp" with us at events, but we do not actively seek to grow large by recruiting large numbers of people into the household. New members are invited from among existing members' circle of friends.
